Although it might seem quite a big kitchen gadget, for a coffee machine of this quality it’s actually slim line, and soon begins to feel like it’s always been part of your kitchen setup. It’s very easy to set up with clear instructions and very little ‘faffing’ about, apart from an initial bit of ‘water hardness’ testing and system flushing. Once that’s done you’re ready to load up the machine with your coffee beans and play with the different coffee settings.
One of the things I particularly love (apart from it delivering a gorgeous creamy coffee) is that most of the settings are adjustable…
– strength of coffee (perfect if you have family or friends like have different coffee strength tastes),
– water temp,
– volume of coffee delivered per setting
– how coarse or fine the coffee grounds are.
The ability to change the strength of the coffee has been particularly useful as it enables us to alter the strength per cup of coffee for everyone. The default factory settings are a little weak for my liking but a small adjustment to the strength (amount of coffee ground) control rectified that.
The milk frother is simple to use, heating and frothing evenly, resulting in wonderfully warm, creamy white bubbles to pour into your coffee. And even cleaning the machine is simple and easy to do, with an automatic flush clean of the coffee spout when it’s first started up and when it goes into stand by mode. I can’t comment personally on the frothy creamy taste as I’m a black coffee kinda gal, but friends and family assure me it hits the spot.
This really is a fool-proof coffee making gadget (my girls mastered it very quickly which means I get an early morning coffee in bed!).
Now a good coffee machine requires a better quality coffee bean to deliver that gorgeous ‘coffee-shop‘ taste. So I have been trying out a few new brands of coffee beans. One of those brands is Pellini who kindly sent us some of their No. 82 Vivace whole coffee beans (US Amazon) whole coffee beans and No. 42 Cremes Ground Coffee to try.
Pellini is a family run company, based in Italy. They’ve been growing and roasting coffee since 1922 and offers some of the best Italian coffee you will ever taste. Using only the finest Arabica and Robusta beans they create coffee that’s renowned for its flavour and aroma and guaranteed to be excellent every time.
No. 82 is a blend of Arabica and Robusta coffee beans and it smells wonderful from the moment you open the packet and pour the beans into the grinding area, right through to your first sip. It’s hard to describe (I’m not a coffee connoisseur), but it just smells rich, thick and full of body and has the most wonderful creamy head (I’m not sure that’s a technical term but think of a teeny Guinness and you’ll get the image). And it tastes just like it smells.
No.42 is pre-ground and we haven’t used it as much mainly because, although the De’Longhi Autentica ETAM29.510.SB Bean to Cup Coffee Machine takes pre-ground coffee, it only takes one scoop at a time and you have to empty the bean hopper to ensure you get the pre-ground coffee taste. So the convenience isn’t there and to be honest I can’t imagine why you’d want to use pre-ground coffee apart from if you wanted a quick ‘one-off’ change of bean. Still, even with minimal testing, this is yet another gorgeous dark, rich coffee made from a blend of Arabica and Robusta Coffee beans. It’s a little smoother in taste than the No.82 blend with a less poke but still a great tasting coffee.
A bonus surprise I’ve found since having the De’Longhi coffee machine is that my vintage tea cups, that just aren’t big enough for a good thirst quenching cup of tea, make the perfect coffee cup for a doppio+ and … extra win!
- It can be used with pre-ground coffee or whole roasted coffee beans.
- Easy one-touch control panel
- Adjustable coffee spout
- Ability to personalise settings (coffee strength, water hotness, coffee grind size)
- Milk frother
- Easy clean drip tray
- Easy access waste coffee grinds
This De’Longhi coffee machine also comes with a water softener filter, a water hardness test kit and a descaler (the machine will tell you when to descale). If you want a great coffee at the touch of a button then this machine really is worth checking out. You’ll have to get a bit hands-on if you fancy a cappuccino or a warm milk latte but apart from that this really is a one-touch, easy to use coffee machine. It’s a perfect addition to the kitchen, for the amateur coffee lover!
NB. ao.com sent me the machine in return for the video review and Pellini sent me their coffee beans to try out in the machine for free
